Artist Spotlight: Lauren Sevian

Eau Claire Jazz Inc. welcomes world-class saxophonist Lauren Sevian to her fifth appearance at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival!

Lauren Sevian is a prolific baritone saxophonist, bandleader, and educator based out of New York City. She has performed professionally since the age of twelve and has achieved many awards and accolades, establishing her position as one of the most sought-after jazz artists in the country.

At age sixteen she won the Count Basie Orchestra’s invitational solo competition, leading to a feature performance with the ensemble. By age seventeen the saxophonist had performed in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Village Vanguard. Today, Lauren Sevian has performed with iconic groups such as the all-female Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, The Mingus Big Band, and of course the Count Basie Orchestra, as well as numerous others. She is perhaps best known for her combo work with the LSQ, or Lauren Sevian Quartet, as well as LSAT – her jazz quintet co-led with another trailblazing New York saxophonist Alexa Tarantino.

Her extensive performing career has been recognized through a multitude of awards. Her first record Blueprint won the SESAC jazz award for national performance activity, and the LSAT quintet recently took home first place in the “Made in NY” jazz competition. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, she became a Grammy Award winning artist for her playing on Live at the Jazz Standard, a record produced by the Mingus Big Band.

As with many great artists, Lauren Sevian recognizes the importance of education in the music tradition. The world-class performer is also a frequent clinician at many universities, high schools, jazz festivals, is on faculty at the New School, and has taught private lessons for fifteen years. She has adjudicated for Essentially Ellington, the Next Generation Jazz Festival, the Victoria Music Festival, and our very own Eau Claire Jazz Festival. She is on faculty at Jazz at Lincoln Center both as a director of the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra and an instructor for the Middle School Jazz Academy.

In addition to her incredible performing and teaching careers, the saxophonist is also an outspoken representative for women in the arts. In her work with the Diva Jazz Orchestra, her collaboration with Alexa Tarantino, and her work at Jazz at Lincoln Center, she has become an example for young women aspiring to be performing artists. Along with leading by example, she has publicly shared her experience as a woman in the New York jazz scene and the struggles therein.

We at Jazz Inc. cannot wait to welcome back Lauren Sevian to the Eau Claire Jazz Festival, and are looking forward to hear this world-class musician once again!
