Guest Artist Spotlight: The New York Voices

This year, Eau Claire Jazz Inc. welcomes back the New York Voices for the 2019 Eau Claire Jazz Festival!

Formed in 1987 and primarily from a group of Ithaca College alums, the virtuosic vocal jazz ensemble quickly reached domestic and international fame. Since their inception, the New York Voices have released thirteen records and have played with some of the finest ensembles in the world, jazz and otherwise.

The group is highly sought after – enjoying their prestige as the first-call vocal jazz ensemble for the arranger/conductors of the world. Their sheer ability makes them a favorite to write for – seemingly able to pull off music of any complexity melodically or harmonically. Some of these collaborators include Bob Mintzer, Don Sebesky, Michael Abene, Keith Lockhart, Rob Fisher, Ivan Lins, and Gil Goldstein.

The NYV have performed and/or recorded with the Danish Radio Big Band, WDR Big Band, Count Basie Orchestra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, as well as the Boston Pops and the Metropole Orchestra. They have also individually worked with such artists as Paquito D’Rivera, Jim Hall, Ray Brown, Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, and many, many more.

Recognizing the importance of education, the NYV has made it a point of emphasis in their career. They regularly give workshops and clinics to high school and college ensembles around the world, and even started a vocal jazz camp was well as an international counterpart, garnering students from all over the world.

We are excited to listen and learn from the New York Voices at this year’s Eau Claire Jazz Festival!
