Artist Spotlight: Alexa Tarantino

Eau Claire Jazz Inc. welcomes second-time festival guest Alexa Tarantino!

Saxophonist, composer, and educator Alexa Tarantino has been making waves in the jazz world in recent years. Based in New York City, the young musician has established a robust career for herself while still attending her master’s studies at Juilliard. She currently holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and the award-winning arts program of Hall High School.

Alexa currently performs in many of the highest-caliber jazz ensembles in New York. These groups include the DIVA jazz orchestra with Sherrie Maricle, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Gil Evans Project, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis. She also leads the acclaimed Alexa Tarantino Quartet and co-leads the award-winning combo LSAT with her colleague Lauren Sevian, who will also be attending the 2019 Eau Claire Jazz Festival!

In her young career, Alexa has performed with various high-profile musicians including Randy Brecker, John Patitucci, Esperanza Spalding, Ravi Coltrane, Vivay Iyer, and Dariusz Terefenko, among others. Among her numerous performances include several Jazz festivals. She has participated in the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Rockport Jazz Festival, the Rochester International Jazz festival, and our very own Eau Claire Jazz Festival!

The saxophonist has numerous accolades under her belt. She was awarded the Made in NY jazz competition award for her involvement in LSAT, won the Yamaha young Performing Artists Saxophone Competition 2014, landed as a finalist in North American Saxophone Alliance, and won the Jazz Education Network’s Women in Jazz Scholarship as well.

Alexa Tarantino finds herself among the ranks of world-class performers that value and emphasize music education. She has previously taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and is currently on faculty at the JALC youth education program, directing one of their High School Jazz Academy big bands. She has even founded her own jazz workshop in Rockport that has since bloomed from humble beginnings. She is a frequent guest artist and clinician in numerous colleges, high schools, and summer jazz programs as well.

We look forward to seeing this incredible rising star at the 2019 Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Don’t miss the opportunity to see her performing on 52nd street!
