Beginning Jazz Piano

This clinic will focus on teaching students to read and realize chords from a lead sheet.  Learn about the ii - V - I progression and efficient ways to approach it using Strayhorn's "Take the 'A' Train" as a model.  Want to modernize your blues voicings?  This is the clinic for you!

Composer's Panel Discussion

Join nationally recognized composers Michael Sweeney, Kyle Newmaster, Jamey Simmons, Susie Jones and Wayne Senior as they discuss the creative process of composition.  A Q&A session with the audience will be included.

Relax with Michael in an informal setting to explore the world of music composition, its challenges and rewards. 

Vocal Jazz Workshop

Phil Mattson | 2 p.m. | Schofield Auditorium | UW-Eau Claire Campus

Two-time Grammy nominated pianist, arranger, conductor and teacher, Phil Mattson, will explore the art of vocal jazz and discusses the factors that make artistic ensemble and solo singing possible. Mattson will demonstrate basic vocal and rehearsal techniques for ensembles and soloists. He will engage audience participation and demonstrate with students. This clinic will provide the “how to” steps to help any director incorporate vocal jazz into their music program.

Kenni Holmen is one of the most active touring and recording musicians from the Twin Cities Area. This saxophonist, name “Best Tenor Sax Player of the Year” by the Twin Cities Reader, will demonstrate and speak on improvising, playing styles, interaction with a rhythm section, solo special effects and more. This is one master class you don’t want to miss.

Grammy award-winning trumpeter, Nicholas Payton, is here to answer your questions! Come prepared to ask this world renowned artist about his music, the music business, technique, style and more. Heralded as one of the new-generation guardians of the hard bop flame, Nicholas Payton is consistently committed to discovering his voice outside of the strict confines of a “rearview mirror approach” to the music. A true leader in the genre, he continues to push the envelope and move the music forward by meshing contemporary influences into his unique and distinctive sound. Featuring a wide variety of styles and levels, hear new charts by Mark Taylor, Michael Philip Mossman, Mike Tomaro, Rick Stitzel, Paul Murtha, and Michael Sweeney. Also included is a brief demonstration of the "Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble" method for beginning jazz programs.

Michael Sweeney is a multi-award-winning composer, arranger and producer. He is Director of Band Publications at Hal Leonard Corp.

Advanced Improvisation

Take your improve skills to a new level! Learn how to tap your own creative juices and feel the music through your
fingers. It’s all in the sound! 

Aaron Hedenstrom is a composer, musician and student at UW- Eau Claire. He is majoring in music composition, performs in the Jazz I Ensemble, plays alto saxophone.

 


Beginning Improvisation

Anyone can improvise! It’s all in the ears. Learn a jazz tune and how to improvise on it at a beginning level.

Joseph Niemann is a musician and student at UW- Eau Claire. He is majoring in business, performs in the Jazz I Ensemble, plays trumpet.
