UWEC Jazz Studies

The UW-Eau Claire Jazz Studies Area is a thriving educational environment with five jazz ensembles and 20 combos under the direction of Mr. Robert Baca, Director, Jazz Studies. Students seeking to be performers and educators are offered a well-rounded education in jazz and classical studies and are provided diverse opportunities to publicly perform. The Jazz Studies Area has received the Down Beat Magazine "Best College Big Band" Award five times in eight years, along with many individual awards. Jazz Ensemble I has recorded a CD each of the last 10 years, with two nominated for a Grammy Award: "Jazz in ClearWater--Harpoon" and "Jazz in ClearWater -- Things to Come." The group has performed internationally in Europe and the Pacific Rim. While performing in China, Jazz Ensemble I was recognized as the first jazz ensemble to tour the country since its opening to the western world.
