Famed Saxophonists Joining the Festival in All Areas
Eau Claire Jazz Inc. is pleased to announce that two prominent and well-established jazz saxophonists will be attending the annual Eau Claire Jazz Festival this year. Both based in New York, Lauren Sevian and AlexaTarantino are two inspiring figures for women in music, each holding numerous accolades and accomplishments in the jazz scene.
Lauren Sevian is a baritone saxophonist and a regular member of the Basie Band, DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and the Mingus Big Band. By the early age of sixteen she had won the Count Basie Invitational competition, leading to a feature performance with the group. She went on to become the first female saxophonist to tour with the band years later. She has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Village Vanguard and has served as a guest artist at many universities. Her jazz festival involvement includes performances at the St. Louis, Sleepy Hollow, and Monterey Jazz Festivals as well as our very own Eau Claire Jazz Festival. Educationally oriented, Sevian is a teaching artist the Litchfield Jazz Camp, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has taught at the School of Jazz and Queens College. We are ecstatic to welcome her back for her third year at the festival.
Alexa Tarantino hails from West Hartford, Connecticut, holds a degree from the Eastman School of Music, and is currently studying at the Julliard School. Tarantino, like Sevian, has seen great success at a young age, having become a regular of Arturo O’Farrill’s Latin Jazz Orchestra and DIVA Jazz Orchestra during her studies atJulliard, which includes membership of the Julliard Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. She too, has been featured as a guest artist in multiple universities and jazz festivals such as the Umbria, Rockport, and Charlotte Jazz Festivals. Also focused on jazz education, Tarantino has taught at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, is the founder and director of the Rockport Jazz Workshop, and is on faculty for the Jazz at Lincoln Center youth education program as well as the Birch Creek Jazz Camp right here in Wisconsin.
The two talents have collaborated in many settings including the Lauren Sevian Quartet and the LSAT jazz combo, and will be once again working together in their involvement in the Eau Claire Jazz Festival, acting as adjudicators, clinicians, and 52nd street performers. Eau Claire Jazz is very proud to present performers of this caliber in this year’s festival, and we hope to see everyone there.
